FAQs

Does acupuncture hurt?

No. Most people find acupuncture to be relaxing and pain free. Patients may feel a sensation with the needles which typically feels as a heaviness or aching, sometimes traveling sensations within the area. Patients usually do not consider these sensations to be uncomfortable. These sensations are normally an indications that your body is responding well to the treatment.

It is important to note that sometimes with acupuncture things can get worse before they get better. This can be a result of acupuncture releasing areas that have been stagnant and problematic for some time. It is important to drink plenty of fluids, eat good nutritious meals, and stretch or lightly walk for 24 to 48 hours following your treatments to keep encouraging blood flow throughout your body.

How many sessions are necessary?

The amount of treatments typically depend on the condition being addressed. Some problems require long term treatments that occur weekly to biweekly for a significant period of time. Others may be resolves in fewer treatments within a few weeks. Your practitioner is willing to work with you and your schedule to best accommodate the most effective results.

How does acupuncture work?

Through the insertion of fine needles into specific points along pathways (or meridians) within the body, your acupuncturist will stimulate the flow of your body’s natural vital energy (qi, pronounced “Chee”). this free flow of energy enables the body to restore natural balance and help your body return to a healthy state. According to some researchers, the effects of acupuncture may be linked to the stimulation of recognized nerve pathways that connect with areas within the brain. As a result, important physiological function may be regulated with acupuncture. Acupuncture's ability to control pain and stabilize mood may arise through the release of endorphins triggered by the acupuncture needle insertion and stimulation.
